Before I came to CommonWealth Purchasing Group, I spent nine years working at a Federally Qualified Health Center. That experience shapes how I think about this organization every day. If you’ve worked at or with an FQHC, you know the culture is unlike almost anywhere else. Every decision clinical, operational, financial gets filtered through one question: how does this affect the patient in front of us? It’s not a slogan on a wall. It’s the actual logic the organization runs on.

When I joined CPG, I recognized that same logic immediately, just aimed at two audiences instead of one.

For our members, we exist to steward cost reduction and savings. Health centers operate on thin margins, serving communities that depend on every dollar being spent well. Our job is to negotiate contracts our members couldn’t negotiate alone, hold vendors accountable to pricing and performance, and make sure the savings we generate actually reach the organizations doing the frontline work of care.

That’s not abstract. During a recent business review, our team identified a 31% savings opportunity in a member’s annual office supplies spend money that goes directly back into a health center’s ability to serve patients- simply by applying the right scrutiny to a line item most organizations never think to revisit.

For our vendor partners, the relationship runs the other direction, but the same commitment applies. CPG isn’t just a negotiating table; we’re a marketing, sales, and engagement solution built to connect you with a national network of FQHCs and healthcare nonprofits you’d otherwise spend years and significant resources reaching one by one. That office supplies review is what real engagement looks like from your side too: not just a price negotiation, but an active partnership that keeps your relationship with our members visible and worth renewing.

That balance full accountability to our members’ bottom line, full commitment to our vendors’ growth and visibility is exactly why I’m excited about the announcement elsewhere in this newsletter: the official launch of our new Member Portal. After a couple of months of beta testing with a select group of members, we’re rolling it out to our full network.

The portal is built around this same dual purpose. For members, it means a direct, real-time view of the contracts you’re already using, the savings you’re already generating, and the full menu of contracts available to you that you may not yet be taking advantage of. For our vendor partners, it opens a new, more direct channel to showcase your products, services, and pricing to our membership, turning what used to be a periodic conversation into an ongoing, visible presence in front of the people making purchasing decisions. Vendors interested in adding more of their materials to their portal section should reach out to us at marketing@cwpurchasing.com.

The portal isn’t a separate initiative from what I’ve described here — it’s the same member-centered, partner-focused commitment, built into a tool you can use every day. And it’s only the beginning: CPG is committed to embracing the technology that helps us serve you better, and you can expect more innovation from us throughout the coming year.

Nine years on the health center side taught me that mission-driven organizations don’t maintain focus like this by accident. It takes deliberate effort — and now, better tools. To our members: thank you for trusting us to steward your resources as if they were our own. To our vendor partners: thank you for investing in a network built on shared accountability, not just access.
